BASF Is Pushing the Boundaries of EV Battery & Charging Station Technology

Every year, the EV share in the motor industry grows, and every year, BASF pushes to increase that market share. By further developing charging station technology, increasing the lifespan and effectiveness of lithium-ion batteries and, therefore, a driver's ability to drive further per charge, BASF is making EVs a better choice for the general public every day.

EV Batteries

Developing EV batteries has many unique challenges that gas-powered vehicles don't face. Traditionally limited energy storage, extreme weight increases, and the danger of potentially shocking the occupants are just some of the problems EVs have faced.

But BASF has found ways to address all these problems through the use of innovative engineering and in-house polymers like Ultramid.

How BASF Is Improving EV Batteries

With the use of Ultramid, BASF has found answers to many of the problems facing electric car batteries. Some of the material's many qualities include:

  • electrical resistance
  • chemical resistance
  • lightweight
  • high-strength

The battery poses a danger to the passengers if it isn't properly shielded. Additionally, the tremendous weight the battery adds to an EV reduces the maximum mileage these vehicles should be capable of. Thanks to Ultramid's light weight, electrical and chemical resistant properties, it's an ideal solution to both these problems.

Parts that used to be metal like the battery mount, cooling pipes, the cell management system, and more can now be constructed out of Ultramid. The end result is greater safety and battery efficiency, pushing EVs energy storage closer to the 300-400 miles per charge consumers expect from their motor vehicles.

It's easy to take gas pumps for granted, but the engineering of transferring gasoline to a tank was dangerous before innovative minds found the solution. The same is true of charging stations.

BASF has made great strides in increasing the safety of charging stations. Designed to be sleek but safe, every piece of the charger has been examined and improved with safety in mind.

From the charging gun to the cooling system, Ultramid goes above and beyond again. Ultramid has been utilized in nearly every piece of the charging station. As the material is flame-retardant and chemical resistant, it's perfect for the charging inlet, loading gun, breakers, switches, and other safety components.
